中國古代的煉丹近似於西方的煉金，都是為了追求人類的夢想，黃金或者長生不老，我們相信都是可以藉由物質的聚合和轉化而達到。在現代，我們找到了石油，碳與氫，這是許多化學工業的基礎，建構了我們的日常生活、經濟、科技、國家安全和夢。
以數千年來人類與石油的愛恨糾纏為經，臺灣地方的人事時物為緯，我們帶回了歷史與田野的風景與故事，在《煉丹場》內逐一道來。
Ancient Chinese alchemy or “liandanshu” is similar to western alchemy—both were pursuits of human dreams, whether for gold or immortality, believed to be attainable through the aggregation and transformation of materials. In modern times, we have discovered petroleum—carbon and hydrogen—the foundation of many chemical industries, shaping our daily lives, economy, technology, national security, and dreams.
Weaving between the millennia-old entanglement humanity and petroleum as the warp and the people, events, times, and places of Taiwan as the weft, we bring back the landscapes and stories from history and fieldwork, and recount them one by one in The Grand Elixir Factory.
